Adelaide to Gawler Railway is to be electrified Today 25th May at 11.00 am at Gawler.
Independent Candidate for the Federal Seat Wakefield JOHN BOLTON will demonstrate how easy it is to electrify the line at the Howard Street Railway level crossing in Gawler tomorrow.
There have been repeated announcement by both major parties before almost every election that the Gawler Line is to be up-graded and electrified.
Currently the Prime Minister is merely tantalising Gawler residents and all commuters north of Salisbury by saying in November 2015 that it will be “considered” The current “plan” is to electrify from Adelaide to Salisbury only by 2018.
Mr Bolton says it is not acceptable for Elizabeth and Gawler Residents to have to change trains to Diesel at Salisbury for the trip home.
In the lead up to the election – deathly silence by the major parties on the issue. But in a south Adelaide marginal seat he announced an $85 Million brand new rail line spur to Flinders University. It was only going to cost $76 Million to electrify the Gawler Line.
Northern residents are fed up with electrification to Gawler having been announced so many times and yet ignored due to Wakefield being a safe seat with neither party having the political imperative to do anything.
BOLTON says that up-grading the Railway Line is one of the things that needs to be done to show some vision for the future of Wakefield and the Northern Adelaide Plains.
Other Policy statements are:
- By voting for BOLTON you make this a marginal area. We can make demands. Government will pour in resources.
- Bring in industry by expanding the Moomba gas pipeline and spur lines, up-grade and maintain railways and roads so that the north is industry inviting.
- Build a Northern Adelaide University on the Holden’s site.
- Connect it to Lyall McEwen as a university teaching hospital and take over Roseworthy Campus. Re-introduce a Wine Making Degree to service Clare & Barossa and international students
- Up-grade our northern passenger rail to electricity and re-furbish it to Roseworthy and Concordia.
- Attract business and manufacturing by providing real infrastructure incentives at an international level.
- No fudged figures on under employment – half a job cannot support a family.
- Drivers licence de-merit points to be increased for commercial drivers.
- Bring back good behaviour bonds to allow driving during working hours only.
11.00 a.m. On site. Howard Street, Gawler. for the demonstration of the electrification of the Line.

In 2008, the State Government announced a plan to rebuild the Gawler line in preparation for the line to be electrified with the Federal Government also to provide funding.[6]
This work saw the track removed, with the track bed and track renewed. Dual gauge sleepers were laid to allow for the line to be converted to standard gauge at a future date. The line was closed between North Adelaide and Mawson Interchange for four months from June 2010 for this work to be performed, and Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central station for seven months from September 2011.[7][8][9]
Following the withdrawal of the Federal Government funding, the electrification was postponed in October 2013.[10] In June 2014, it was announced that the electrification of the line as far as Salisbury will commence in 2018.[11]
