Sept 2015 The Royal Life Saving Society's annual drowning report ... revealed a 30 per cent national increase in drownings of children aged under five last year, reversing a historic downward trend.
The Royal Life Saving Society's annual drowning report recorded 271 deaths due to drowning last financial year, with 26 of those of preschool-aged.
That was a 30 per cent increase on the 20 young children who died in the previous year, representing one in 10 drowning deaths.
Swimming pool fences – As the regulation of private pool owners goes up – so do infant drownings.
My point is. There is no use in doing things for political appearances.
As a young copper I went to a back yard pool toddler drowning and was there when the infant was being taken out of the pool. The Dad was of course distraught. There was a pool fence and both father and child were inside the pool fence. Father was “weeding” some garden inside the fence just a few feet away and had his back turned.
“Only for a few seconds” He said. No. it wasn’t.
It must have been long enough for the child to fall in and drown.
Imposing regulations on pool fencing may not be causing an increase infant drowning but it is almost certainly making no difference.
There is simply no substitute for good parenting.
