Punishment for criminals is imposed by the community. We can all understand why those close to victims and victims may want maximum penalties. As a community we step back from that. We excuse crimes of passion.
If someone tries to, or is in the process of maiming or killing me, or another in my presence, I think i may respond in kind in the heat and necessity of the moment. I think that I am unlikely to turn the other cheek at that point and the law forgives those that do not.
